Lizzo was born in Detroit, Michigan. When she was 10 years old, her family moved to Houston, Texas. Lizzo began rapping as a teenager in the Southeast part of Houston known as Alief. At age 14 she formed a group called Cornrow Clique with her closest friends. She studied classical music focusing on Flute at the University of Houston. At age 21, after her father's death, she lived in her car for a year as she tried to break into the music industry. She moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2011.
